The Daedra Shrine

Come...Into Oblivion

Azura

WARNING: ALL PARAGRAPHS CONTAIN SPOILERS!

Azura is the Daedric Prince who's sphere is Dusk and Dawn. The magic in-between realms of twilight. She is also known as the Mother of the Rose, Queen of the Night Sky, and the anticipation of Sotha Sil. Azura is most reconized with the artifact, Azura's Star, a reusable soul gem. Azura is one of the few Daedra who could be concidered "good" by mortal standards.

Moonshadow is Azura's plane of Oblivion, where she lives in a rose palace. According to The Doors of Oblivion, it is blindingly beautiful and colorful, with flowers, waterfalls, trees, and a city of silver.

Azura was the god-ancestor that tought the Chimer the mysteries needed to be different from the Altmer. Some of her more conventional teachings are sometimes attributed to Boethiah. In the stories, Azura is often more a communal cosmic force for the race as a whole than a ancestor or a god.

Azura told Nerevar that Dagoth Ur's knowlage of the Heart of Lorkhan was accurate. This caused a war with the Dwemer (whos king denied knowlage of the Heart, although he only denied it due to lack of his own personal knowlage of the subject), from which Nerevar emerged the victor and the Dwemer did not emerge at all. Later, when the Tribunal of Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil murdered Nerevar and positioned themselves as supirior new gods to the old Daedra, Azura cursed the Chimer (Caused their skin to become a dark blackish color and eyes red, thus making them Dunmer, or Dark Elves) and claimed that she would cause Nerevar to be reborn and that he would make things right again. Later, Azura aided the Nerevarine in defeating Dagoth Ur and toppling the Tribunal Temple (due to the differing accounts, told by various factions and individuals in Morrowind, that this should be taken with a grain of salt). Though never obviously deceitful, it can be portrayed as disturbing how she always gets what she desires in the end.

In Elsweyr, Azura is perceived as nearly a wholly seperate entity, known locally as Azurah. She is credited with making the Khajiit out of the Bosmer stock in Elsweyr. Azura's summoning day is the 21st of First Seed. Also known as Hogithum.

Boethiah

Boethiah is the Daedric prince who rules over deceit, conspiracy, secret plots of murder, assassination, treason, and unlawful overthrow of authority. Boethiah is depicted as a great caped warrior, often in a stoic pose. He is also known as the Anticipation of Almalexia. Boethiah loves competition and battle, and this nature is manifested in his quest in Oblivion, transporting the player to his realm of Oblivion for a tournament to decide who is truly worthy of Goldbrand, an enchanted katana with a gold-colored blade.

Heralded by the Prophet Veloth, Boethiah is the original god-ancestor of the Dark Elves. Through his illuminations, the eventual 'Chimer', or Changed Folk, renounced all ties to the Aldmer and founded a new nation based on Daedric principles. All manner of Dark Elven cultural 'advances' are attributed to Boethiah, from philosophy to magic to 'responsible' architecture. Ancient Velothi allegories are uniformly heroic successes of Boethiah over enemies of every type, foundation stories of Chimeri struggle.

It is possible Boethiah assisted Jagar Tharn in his temporary procurement of the Imperial throne.

Mephala

Mephala is a Daedric Prince whose sphere is obscured to mortals, also known by the names Webspinner, Spinner, Spider, and the Anticipation of Vivec. His/her only consistent theme seems to be interference in the affairs of mortals for his/her amusement. He/She is a hermaphrodite, appearing sometimes male and sometimes female depending on whom s/he wants to ensnare. S/he also helped directly to found the infamous cult/society of the Morag Tong. His/her sphere seems to indicate a careful plan carried out through executions, each life a portion of a massive web. Mephala sees the affairs of mortals as a weave; pull but one thread and the whole thing unravels.

In Morrowind, he/she was the ancestor that taught the Chimer the skills they would need to evade their enemies or to kill them with secret murder. Enemies were numerous in those days since the Chimer were a small faction. He/she, along with Boethiah, organized the clan systems that eventually became the basis for the Great Houses.

His/her quest in Oblivion involves inciting a peaceful town into anarchy. S/he asks the player to implicate the two families that live there of murdering each other's leaders so that they will openly begin hostilities.

Mehrunes Dagon

Mehrunes Dagon is the Daedric Prince of Destruction, Change, Revolution, Energy, and Ambition. He is associated with natural dangers like fire, earthquakes, and floods. He is an especially important deity in Morrowind, where he represents its near-inhospitable terrain. In some cultures, though, Dagon is merely a god of bloodshed and betrayal. Dagon's plane of Oblivion is known as Deadlands.

It is said that Mehrunes Dagon is too powerful for a mortal to kill, so only an invincible creature can destroy him. Therefore, only deities such as Akatosh have the ability to destroy Mehrunes Dagon.

He positively assisted Jagar Tharn in his temporary procurement of the Imperial throne, probably because of the decade of deliberate warfare and strife under Tharn. He invaded and seized control of the Battlespire in contravention of the Daedric pact preventing unchecked meddling in mortal affairs by divine beings; the purpose of this was to cripple the capacity of the Imperial College of Battlemages which presented a threat to Tharn's power as Emperor. Mehrunes Dagon was also responsible for the destruction of Mournhold at the end of the First Era and apparently destroyed Ald Sotha, home of House Sotha and Sotha Sil's birthplace. Dagon was also the alleged inventor of the Daedric Crescent.

The Hero of Daggerfall received Mehrunes' Razor as a reward for exterminating a rogue Frost Daedra.

In Oblivion, the plot centers around Dagon's plot to destroy the Septim bloodline, and open the gates to Oblivion throughout Cyrodiil, to launch a new invasion. The Cult of the Mythic Dawn are diehard Dagon worshippers and work to bring the coming of Dagon in Oblivion. The cult focuses on the eternal dawn on which Dagon shall come to cleanse the world of all non-followers.

Malacath

Malacath is the Daedric prince whose sphere is the patronage of the spurned and ostracized, the keeper of the Sworn Oath, and the Bloody Curse. Malacath was created when Boethiah ate the Aedroth Trinimac. The Orsimer ("Pariah Folk" in Elvish) or Orcs were also created, as they were Trinimac's devout followers. Malacath is not recognized as a Daedric Prince by his peers, which fits his sphere perfectly. The Dunmer say he is also Malak (or Malauch), the god-king of the Orcs; he always tests the Dunmer for physical weakness. Malacath spurns physical weakness, hence the above-average strength of the creatures associated with him.

Malacath's plane of Oblivion is Ashpit. It is described as consisting only of dust, palaces of smoke, and vaporous creatures: "anguish, betrayal, and broken promises like ash filled the bitter air". Levitation and magical breathing are necessary to survive.

The Hero of Daggerfall fulfilled Malacath's thirst for vengence on a traitorous suiter, whereby his efforts were rewarded with the Volendrung.

In Morrowind, Malacath wished revenge; not for himself, but for an orc. The story goes that a mighty Orc adventurer that slew a great threat was denied his rightful fame and glory by his Dunmer partner who claimed the credit for himself. Malacath demanded justice and seeing as both the original Orc and Dunmer were long dead, settled for the next best thing; he gives the player a quest to slay what he believed was the only remaining descendant of that Dunmer. This is however in vain, as another descendant could be found in Oblivion.

In Oblivion a player can visit Malacath's shrine, patronized entirely by orcs who view other races as digusting vile creatures. Malacath's statue is a muscular orc ready to strike with a heavy weapon, and accepts an offering of troll fat in return for a quest to free enslaved ogres. Once freed, Malacath comments on how ogres should not be servants to anyone except himself, implying that Malacath merely uses the trolls, orcs, and ogres instead of respecting them as his followers; however he does call the ogres his "little brothers". Upon the release of his ogres, Malacath presents the player with a strong war hammer called the Volendrung, which represents his strength.

In Shivering Isles, Sheogorath describes Malacath as "Not popular at parties."

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/Goldenchicken1/Daedra/statue_malacath_s.jpg

Molag Bal

Molag Bal is the Daedric Prince whose sphere is the domination and enslavement of mortals. He is known as the King of Rape. His only desire is to harvest the souls of mortals and to bring mortals souls within his sway by spreading seeds of strife and discord in the mortal realms. He is a Daedric power of much importance in Morrowind, where he is always the archenemy of Boethiah, the Prince of Plots.

Molag Bal's plane of Oblivion is Coldharbour. The book The Doors of Oblivion says that his plane resembles a copy of Nirn, including the Imperial Palace, but all desecrated and ruined. The ground is sludge, the sky is on fire, and the air is freezing.

He is the main source of the obstacles to the Dunmer (and preceding Chimer) people. In the legends, Molag Bal always tries to upset the bloodlines of Houses or otherwise ruin Dunmeri 'purity'. He is also the god of rape and is said to be the father (along with Vivec, whom he seduced) of a population of mutant degenerates living in the Molag Amur region of Morrowind. Most disturbingly, this race may have been the first eventual vampires, a corruption of Vivec's ties to the Heart of Lorkhan transmitted to mortals. It is possible he assisted Jagar Tharn in his temporary procurement of the Imperial throne. He was also responsible for the destruction of a city at the end of the First Era.

The Hero of Daggerfall received Mace of Molag Bal in exchange for eliminating a heretic mage.

Sheogorath / Jyggalag

Sheogorath is the Daedric Prince of Madness, whose motives are said to be unknowable. His realm in Oblivion is known as the Madhouse , though it has also been called the Asylums by the Imperial Census of Daedra Lords, and called the Shivering Isles by some. It is split into two parts. Mania, the fantastic, colorful side, and Dementia, the horrific, swampy side.

Sheogorath is one of few Daedric Princes whose creation may be linked to the change or destruction of an Aedra (some of the others include Malacath and Meridia). Aldmeri creation stories attribute his creation to the removal of Lorkhan's "divine spark" .. By one of these myths, he is described as the "Sithis-shaped hole" of the world .

It is revealed in The Shivering Isles that Sheogorath is, in fact, Jyggalag, the Daedric Prince of Order. Jyggalag explains that he had grown in power so much that the other Daedric princes grew jealous and fearful. They cursed Jyggalag to live as Sheogorath, the incarnation of the thing he hated most. At the end of every Era, Jyggalag was allowed to take on his true form once again, and reconquer his lands, an event known as the Graymarch. After that, however, he would be transformed back into Sheogorath, and Sheogorath would spread madness upon his lands once more. The player can end this cycle by defeating Jyggalag during the Graymarch occuring at the end of the third era. This releases Jyggalag from his curse, allowing him to remain in his true form instead of transforming back into Sheogorath. After defeating Jyggalag, the player is named the new Sheogorath.

His avatar, to those who have only heard his name and of his Sphere, may find his appearance surprising. He appears on Nirn often as a banker, much to the surprise of many mortals. The reasoning behind his appearance is to lead unsuspecting mortals down the path to insanity, the "Golden Road".

Originally, Sheogorath was one of the Daedric Princes the Chimer, now Dunmer, revered in their ancient ancestoral worship. However, when the Tribunal Temple became the dominating religion in Morrowind, Sheogorath, as well as Mehrunes Dagon, Malacath, and Molag Bal, became known as one of the "Four Corners of the House of Troubles." He was said to rebel against the Tribunal, and thusly worship of Sheogorath became punishable by death. His role in Dunmeri culture is to test them for any psychological weakness, and is associated with the fear other races have of the Dunmer.

When he rebelled against the Tribunal, Sheogorath tricked the moon Baar Dau, inspiring it to hurl itself at the city of Vivec. Sheogorath justified his actions by claiming Vivec was built in mockery of the heavens. Vivec is then said to have frozen Baar Dau in its descent. The moon then swore itself to the Tribunal's service forever.Today, the Tribunal Temple requires a pilgrimage to this moon, called the Shrine of Daring.

Sheogorath is one of the many prominent Daedric Princes in the culture of the Khajiit people. In the Khajiit myth of creation, Sheogorath is called "Sheggorath." By the Khajiit, he is known as the Skooma Cat.

There are five artifacts made by Sheogorath that are known on the mortal plane. The most well known of them all is the staff known as Wabbajack. It can transform a creature into something else, though what it turns into is unpredictable. This artifact can be found in the games TES II: Daggerfall and TES IV: Oblivion after doing tasks for Sheogorath. Another artifact is the glove Gambolpuddy which fortifies half of the user's attributes while draining the other half. Gambolpuddy was found in TES III: Morrowind under a pillow in Ald Daedroth. His third artifact is the Fork of Horripilation, a fork that drains the user's magicka. It was given by the Statue of Sheogorath in Ihinipalit in St. Delyn's Canton's Waterworks in Morrowind. There is also the Spear of Bitter Mercy that can be recieved as a reward for doing Sheogorath's quest in Morrowind. The last artifact worth noting is the Staff of Everscamp. This unique artifact in Oblivion summoned four scamps that could not be banished or killed.

Sheogorath is one of the easiest Daedric Princes to summon. Although his official summoning date is the second of Sun's Dawn, Sheogorath can be summoned anytime there is a storm.

Clavicus Vile

Clavicus Vile is the Daedric prince whose sphere is the granting of power and wishes through ritual invocations and pact. Clavicus has a companion named Barbas. While capable of selective shapeshifting, the form it assumes most of the time is that of a dog. Clavicus himself is depicted as a jovial fellow with horns protruding from his forehead.

It is possible that Clavicus Vile assisted Jagar Tharn in his temporary procurement of the Imperial throne, though by no means certain. In the past, Clavicus Vile has worked through mortal representatives to gain what he desires. The Hero of Daggerfall received the Masque of Clavicus Vile in exchange for assassinating either a rogue Wereboar or Werewolf. In the game Redguard, Vile gambled with the protagonist Cyrus for the soul of Cyrus' sister against Cyrus' own soul. In Morrowind, the player may obtain Clavicus Vile's artifact, The Masque of Clavicus Vile, by defeating a Nord sorcerer who has been terrorizing the village of Dagon Fel. In Oblivion, the Masque can be acquired by finding and returning his sword Umbra.

Hermaeus-Mora

Hermaeus Mora is the Daedric prince whose sphere is scrying of the tides of Fate, of the past and future as read in the stars and heavens, and in whose dominion are the treasures of knowledge and memory. His name is also spelled Hoermius Mora, Hormaius Mora, or Herma-Mora. Also called the Demon of Knowledge, he is vaguely related to the cult origins of the Morag Tong ('Foresters Guild'), if only by association with his brother/sister, Mephala.

Apocrypha is Hermaeus Mora's plane of Oblivion, an endless library where all forbidden knowledge can be found. The books all have black covers with no titles, and the library is haunted by ghosts forever searching for knowledge.

Herma-Mora was an ancient Atmoran demon who, at one time, nearly seduced the Nords into becoming Aldmer. In Nedic Myth he is known as the "Woodland Man" who catches villagers lost in the woods; the secondary set of his name, Mora, is one word for "wood", "woodland" or "tree(s)" in Elvish. Most Ysgrimnoor myths are about escaping the wiles of old Herma-Mora.

The Hero of Daggerfall quested for the Oghma Infinium by summoning Hermaeus Mora.

Hermaeus Mora's shrine in Cyrodiil is located deep within the high mountains north of Bruma near Skyrim. His statue is perplexing and disturbing, a round body with multiple eyes, tentacles and claws. Once summoned he has a deep, disgusting and almost-convoluted voice. His quest in Oblivion can only be completed once the quests of all other Daedric Princes are satisfied. Once they are Mora asks the player to bring one soul of each race to him. This is a difficult task but is highly-rewarded, and the reason for gathering souls is so that his followers can use them in rituals to explore the realms of reality as well as space and time. Hermaeus Mora is surely a powerful Daedric Prince to hold domain over whole aspects of the past, present, and future.

Hircine

Hircine is the Daedric prince whose sphere is the Hunt, the Sport of Daedra, the Great Game, the Chase, known as the Huntsman and the Father of Manbeasts. Hircine created the various therianthropic diseases which transform mortals into beasts, and is therefore the guardian of were-creatures. They reflect his sphere admirably, hunting at night and being hunted by day. Hircine is a sportsman who enjoys giving his prey a chance for victory, however small. Hircine's statue depicts him as a physically fit man whose whole head is obscured by a deer skull with long antlers. He is armed with a great spear and has a companion wolf.

The Hero of Daggerfall, in exchange for hunting a rogue Wereboar, won Hircine's Ring.

In Battlespire, the protagonist was forced to endure a hunt in his realm. Hircine was featured heavily in Bloodmoon, where the Nerevarine was forced to defeat Hircine when he attempted to enter the Mortal Plane. Hircine's typical lackeys on the mortal realm Nirn are werewolves, which he directly talks to, gives tasks and rewards with additional powers. In Oblivion, he sends the protagonist on a hunt. Travel to the hunting grounds, deal with the inhabitant minotaurs, slay the unicorn and return with its horn. When done, Hircine rhetorically asks if its blood was drunk and its flesh eaten, stating that no spoils of a hunt should ever go to waste.

Seven Lycanthropes of Hircine:

Werecrocodiles ~ Werelions ~ Werevultures ~ Wereboar ~ Werebear ~ Werewolf ~ Wereshark

Werewolves and Wereboars have been proven to exist, but the other five are widely believed to be nothing but myth, especially that Wereshark.

The Glenmoril Wyrd Coven of High Rock are known to be Hircine Worshippers, and can cure anyone of Lycanthropy. Their Ritual, "The Right of the Wolf Giver" cures Sanies Lupinus (Werewolves). It is rumored that they have a scroll or potion that can cure the disease, but they have sworn to never reveal the secret.

Meridia

Meridia is an obscure Daedric Prince to mortal eyes, and very little is known about her. She is associated with the energies of living things and bears a special hatred for the undead. The Tract of Merid-nunda paints her as a "wayward solar daughter" who was "cast from the heavens for consorting with illicit spectra." Her realm is known as the Coloured Rooms and is inhabited by the Aurorans, who follow Umaril the Unfeathered and play a major role in the Knights of the Nine quest line. Mankar Camoran attributes her (incorrectly) to Coldharbour, the realm of Molag Bal.

Meridia's strong dislike of undead beings is shown in the quest that the player can do for her in Oblivion. Meridia presents the player with the task of destroying Necromancers who are raiding corpses and tombs to raise an army of the undead. Meridia has a great and everlasting hatred for the undead and will greatly reward any who eliminate them from the world.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/Goldenchicken1/Daedra/dae_meridia.gif

Namira

Namira is the Daedric Prince whose sphere is the ancient darkness. She is known as the Spirit Daedra, ruler of sundry dark and shadowy spirits, and is often associated with spiders, insects, slugs, and other repulsive creatures which inspire mortals with an instinctive revulsion. Namira's followers keep to themselves and prefer living peacefully in dark and squalid conditions, and will react violently at any attempts to "save" them from their abysmal, minimalistic lifestyles.

The Hero of Daggerfall was blessed with Namira's Ring for dispatching an ancient vampire.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/Goldenchicken1/Daedra/dae_namira.gif

Nocturnal

Nocturnal is the Daedric Prince whose sphere is the night and darkness. She is also known as the Night Mistress. The Cyrodiilic Thieves Guild leader, The Gray Fox, has the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, which truly represents the sphere's darkness quality; it permanently removes the wearer's specific identity from all history. Regardless, the Cyrodiil Thieves Guild venerates Nocturnal by ending talks with the saying "Shadow hide you."

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/Goldenchicken1/Daedra/ob_daedra_nocturnal_s.jpg

Peryite

Peryite, also known as the Taskmaster, is the Daedric Prince whose sphere is the ordering of the lowest orders of Oblivion. Some accounts also claim his sphere is pestilence. Peryite's statue depicts a dragon, and is ostensibly concerned with ensuring all things are accounted for, neat, tidy and in their right order. This is most obvious at the end of his quest in Oblivion, he ends off by wishing the protagonist order in his/her life with his reward item.

The Hero of Daggerfall "accounted" an ancient vampire on Peryite's behalf, and profited by receiving Spell Breaker.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/Goldenchicken1/Daedra/dae_peryite.gif

Sanguine and Vaermina

Sanguine

Sanguine is the Daedric Prince whose sphere is hedonistic revelry and debauchery, and passionate indulgences of darker natures. He often appears on the seals and signs of brothels and whore-houses. Sanguine is depicted as a portly man with a demon like head with horns and always with a bottle in his hand, or a whore under his thumb.

The Hero of Daggerfall accepted the Sanguine Rose in exchange for punishing a particularly vociferous, sanctimonius priest.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r246/Goldenchicken1/Daedra/ob_daedra_sanguine_s.jpg

Vaermina

Vaermina (also spelled Vaernima) is a Daedric Prince whose sphere is the realm of dreams and nightmares, and from whose realm issues forth evil omens. Some have also claimed her sphere ties somehow to torture. Statuary of Vaermina depicts her as female.

Vaermina's plane of Oblivion is Quagmire. It is described in The Doors of Oblivion as a nightmare realm, where every few minutes reality shifts and becomes ever more horrifying: "a dark castle one moment, a den of ravening beasts the next, a moonlit swamp, a coffin where he was buried alive."
